SUMMARY:What's Their Story? Panel Discussion with Lindy Drew\, Jaime Mowers\, and Patrick Murphy
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 27 for a panel discussion with Patrick Murphy\, former PBS television producer\, author\, and artist; Jaime Mowers\, Editor-in-Chief and owner of the Webster-Kirkwood Times; and Lindy Drew\, Lead Storyteller and co-founder of HOSTL\, and co-author of Humans of St. Louis. Our panelists will discuss their experience with capturing intimate\, meaningful and personal stories that reflect the make-up of the community. \nAbout Our Panelists\nLindy Drew | Co-founder\, Lead Storyteller\, & Book Co-Author of Humans of St. Louis. After studying at the University of Arizona and the International Center of Photography\, Lindy traveled for three years in Latin America to share people’s stories in the spirit of documentary photography. Lindy graduated in May 2016 from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis with a Masters of Social Work and Public Health. During her education\, she co-founded Humans of St. Louis to have a creative break from classes while getting to better know St. Louis from meeting people on the street. By engaging strangers in insightful personal interviews\, the HOSTL team and her produce visual stories that represent part of the larger community conversations and regional development taking place in St. Louis. Lindy produces new content for HOSTL’s online presence\, presents about the art of storytelling\, and managed the book project’s local creative content team. \nJaime Mowers | Jaime is a Webster Groves native and 2000 graduate of Webster Groves High School. After graduating from Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) with a degree in journalism in 2004\, she worked as a reporter and editor at several newspapers including the Rolla Daily News\, Sullivan Journal and the Springfield News-Leader. She became a reporter at the Webster-Kirkwood Times when she and her husband moved back to St. Louis in the spring of 2011\, and has been with the Times ever since. She became an owner and editor-in-chief of the paper in September 2020\, after she and longtime employees Kent Tentschert and Randy Drilingas purchased the paper from former publisher Dwight Bitikofer. Mowers is also the founder of a kindness project called Buzzing Love\, which is in memory of her dad\, Gary Baranyai\, and you can find her Buzzing Love columns in the paper on the first Friday of every month. Most recently\, she became an international best-selling author with her contribution to the anthology\, “inHer Power\, inHer Wisdom: A Woman’s Guide To Overcoming Challenges and Growing Into Your Power.” \nPatrick Murphy | As a television producer\, Patrick Murphy has earned six Emmys for his public television documentaries on the history and culture of the American heartland. He is the author of Candy Men: The Story of Switzer’s Licorice\, The Irish in St Louis: From Shanty to Lace Curtain\, and Places to Pray: Holy Sites in Catholic Missouri; as well as his writing\, Murphy is known as a woodcut artist\, with prints available at the Missouri History Museum and in galleries around St. Louis. He’s hosted the St. Louis Speakers Series from Powell Hall for more than 20 years. Murphy lives in Webster Groves with his wife Anne and is proud to serve as current board president of Webster Arts.
